I once became an (internet) expert on blacksmithing techniques used by Japanese sword masters. I can’t remember a thing.

Reading about something does not equate to becoming an expert about said thing.
I now know all about fission/fusion/fission bombs, Korean mythology and the beaker/bell culture.

I reckon it still Sinks into your general knowledge and when someone asks you a question your brain spits out a more educated guess than before
At a minimum it increases your cognitive capacity. You may forget all about it, but you trained your brain, which is always a win.
