42·2 days agoIn case anyone thought the “rockstar” being referred to was Joe Strummer, it’s actually Gene Simmons.

33·2 days agoBe nice because you want to be a nice person.
One way I’ve seen this put is don’t be nice, be kind. Nice is performative and ‘nice’ people can be two faced because they’ll be ‘nice’ to both a bully and the bully’s victim.
Being kind is more about empathy. And if you have empathy, you won’t tolerate bullies. It’s far more genuine and not just a performance for whoever you’re currently in the company of.

41·2 days agoAlso, with the way people are around here, a Facebook or Google centred community would just be smartasses shitting on Facebook and Google and anyone that tries to post about them.
I see this hasn’t changed much since I was last here on Lemmy. Even this comment chain, I’m replying to, instead of suggesting nicely to OP to start a community and get something going here, it’s snark and sarcasm. And I know that would put me off, if I was considering making a community before that.
One way I’ve seen this explained is that the bad sensory stuff is things that you can’t control. Whereas the humming or chatting or music or whatever is something that you’re in complete control of. It’s noise that you want and expect, not noise that’s disrupting you.

1·3 days agoThanks Dingus! Lol I love the username.
Honestly I’m trying not to be too optimistic and count on plans that might change or fall through because you never know. But also need to be far away from that hopeless feeling now, I’m done with it.
I hope that your dramatic changes are at least not negative. Maybe sometimes flipping the board and starting over can be good too.

2·4 days agoI was actually semi regularly posting tracks there a few months ago lol. Although my tastes can veer towards the heavier side I love that community. And I’ll probably get back into posting there.
Apologies for the late response, nice to meet you too! 💜

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the most impressive video game mod you've ever come across?English
11·8 days agoFor me personally it has to be certain rom hacks from before the era of decomps and creation kit style tools.
I was fairly active in the gen 3 Pokemon hacking scene on the pokecommunity forums back in the day. And hex editing and trial and error was one thing but real wizards were the ASM hackers that could completely out of the box stuff like adding in new move effects or character customisation functionality or day and night systems, to games that had none of these.
Those were actually the trailblazers that led to all the decomps we have today that have made it so easy.

Thanks for the kind words.

2·10 days agoAt this point yes definitely. I haven’t worked on a career over the years, so my prospects are mainly low paying blue collar stuff for the rest of my life. And from what I’ve gathered, particularly in my country, the teaching English gig rivals or is outright better than most of my other options.
With a lighter schedule and in the comfort of my own home, or anywhere there’s wi-fi. I don’t need to be rich and it would allow for side projects anyway, if I wanted or needed. Personal freedom is something money can’t buy.
And any other old school type jobs that I could get right now would just sap all my physical and mental health and time for the same or less reward.

Yeah that’s fair. Although Reddit also has a lot more users, so the snarky people and the ones that can’t just scroll past something they don’t like stick out more.
So I think, in terms of conversations like this where the bottom line is there’s just not enough users to have all the same communities as Reddit, people could maybe be a bit friendlier to noobs or towards communities they don’t like.
Like, I remember when I first got here, I was still interested in discussing Reddit, so I was around the Reddit community for a bit. And I remember so many people around there just interacting in bad faith. Yes we know Reddit is shit, thanks, your take is isn’t hot, it’s years old.
It wasn’t completely off putting but pretty fucking annoying. In general it’s pretty fucking annoying.
But as you say, Reddit was the same, so it’s not like it’s a Lemmy specific issue. And probably can’t be helped without iron fisted levels of moderation that no one wants.
