  • I had a couple friends who were raised to only speak English at home because their parents wanted them to be fluent and native sounding. One of them, the parents only ever learned basic English so as a concequence it is difficult to communicate any complexity. And functionally no communication with extended family.

That’s a very old fashioned viewpoint and now we know extra languages dont ultimately prevent acquisition, although it can slow thing down a bit at first for an individual language.

I think knowing other languages at any level is only a good thing and kids can learn so much easier.

  • I was never very interested in Instagram so I don’t need to replace it. But I know some people who might. Before I encourage this, some very important question.

What is the porn situation on these? It might be unfair but my impression of all alternative image-sharing platforms is they exist primarily for the benefit of furies and hentai fans. There might be other stuff as well but like on tumblr porn was kind of the backbone. Is it like that?

or is there a viable way in a SFW fashion should you choose, and still have lots of content?

  • How curious. Are you doing a play?

You might have to DIY one if you don’t want an old one. Certainly there are websites you could upload a PDF to that would print for you.

I think the boxes made sense when they were for sale in a brick n mortar store because they are harder to steal and make the person feel like they are buying something when digital goods weren’t such an instinctive idea. I doubt they would be shipped because they are big for no reason and would require a lot of packaging to keep from getting wrecked in transit vs a USB key in a bubble envelope.

To buy linux in a box, you would have to find somewhere near you that is selling it in person. A computer store, a book store. Maybe a campus bookstore? They have a captive audience so sometimes can get away with stuff that doesn’t otherwise make business sense.

  • I also found that strange but I looked it up and found CDC Brief Summary for Clinicians: Evaluating and Managing Patients Exposed to Birds Infected with Avian Influenza A Viruses of Public Health Concern:

CDC recommends that people with these exposures monitor their health for any signs and symptoms for 10 days after their exposure and to call their health department if they develop illness. Health departments may ask responders to seek care and/or testing for avian influenza A virus infection, including specific testing for avian influenza A viruses. […] If conjunctivitis [eye redness] is present, conjunctival [eye] swabs should be collected.

I’m gonna say this person is a worker at a facility where there is an outbreak. Some kind of ag public health nerd conveyed to the workers that any of a broad range of symptoms (see link) is cause for concern in this context. And this person either out of obedience or fear of disease or hoping to get some paid time off did as they were told, went to the ER or a walk in or whatever where a swab was done.

Basically, at least a few people did their jobs by the book. (Forgetting about the broader situation of the business.) It makes sense to have a lower threshold to to test in a very small number of the highest risk people.
