If we’ve devolved to populists on either side trading blows and undoing everything the other team did every 4-8 years by executive orders and authoritarian actions, our country is totally cooked. Might as well pack it up and go home. The US is finished.
Populism is popular because it recognizes the material harms people are experiencing, that means high rent, high cost of living, low wages, bad healthcare, bad public infrastructure, ect.
Right-wing populism exploits that sentiment by scapegoating minorities. Immigrants, LGBT, minorities. It blames them for the problems people are facing to justify fascist policies such as mass deportation, the removal of human rights, and crackdowns on dissent.
Left-wing populism correct identifies the root causes of the material harms and addresses them directly. That means policies for public housing, public infrastructure, universal healthcare, trust busting, high taxes on the wealthy, environmental regulations, even UBI.
Populism exists because the status quo causes harm to the population. There is no choice but to address that harm. If the root causes are not addressed with left-wing populism, right-wing populism will take advantage of the situation to accelerate into Fascism. That’s where we are now in America, fascist. Without any left-wing opposition (and I mean leftist, not liberal), Fascism will continue to grow in it’s violence in both domestic and foreign policy.
Because they’re still mad that their team lost and they’re too blinded by their hatred of the out-group to see any possibility of revolution or unity beyond the electoralism that has once again failed them for glaringly obvious reasons, which they refuse to recognize, because it’s easier to blame scapegoats; sexists, racists, minorities that don’t vote the way they’re supposed to, people who are just too stupid for their own good; than to admit they or their party should have done anything differently and simply isn’t up to the task of defending against fascism. They aren’t interested in “root causes”, or material reality, or even their own party’s rhetorical strategy; only the letter next to the names of their politicians.
In other words, they have fallen into exactly the same patterns as the enemy they so vehemently oppose. Scratch a liberal.
Yeah, the Democratic Party, a liberal institution, is not practicing any left-wing populism. That’s the whole problem. Bernie was the closest, AOC and The Squad show promise. The DNC is only interested in keeping the large donors that fund both parties happy. Pressure from grassroots organizations and opposition are our best bet imo

Why are you ‘both sides’-ing populism?
