I have seen similar features on phones. Luckily my LG G4 has replaceable batteries. I can confirm that multiple times I have seen my battery reported as fully healthy, only to open up the phone and find a spicy pillow.

So it may be useful for some things but I would not be too heavily reliant upon this without fully understanding where that % comes from.

I’ve seen some that claim to be low sugar, but still have a lot of carbs. For a keto diet. Protein content would not be relevant, moreso the lack of carbs.

I have not checked recently, but the last time I was keto pea protein was a very expensive option. I forgot to mention in my first comment but I have found a more reasonably priced brand of low-carb whey protein.

Also I’ve found that I generally don’t like substitutions. Trying to find a food that is similar to bread or rice really just makes me want bread or rice more. The most successful part of dieting for me is to change my mentality from “living to eat” to “eating to live” anyways. So ideally I would like eggs for breakfast (tons of different ways to prepare them), chicken breast and vegetables for lunch (tons of options here too as long as you avoid high-carb sauces or vegetables), and a protein smoothie for dinner (low-sugar Orange Juice, vanilla protein powder, peanut butter, and ice).

I have successfully started again, but I’ve had to use pork and beef instead of chicken. Which is less healthy and more expensive. Fish is also an option, though not being near a coast makes that expensive too. I’m fortunate enough to be able to afford an increased grocery bill without too much hardship, but it’s a conscious choice to cut back on saving up for big things like our next car or home improvement projects.

It has certainly been annoying, the shortage perhaps more than the price.

My wife and I were keto before the pandemic. Years of struggling just to be less overweight, and all of a sudden with keto we just dropped pounds easily. She has epilepsy too, so animal protein is a key piece of her nutrition. We were actually able to continue through the pandemic at first, but eventually a combination of outbreaks at meat packing plants, the bird flu, and of course the collusion of the major agricultural corporations, meant that we stopped because it was just too expensive. Even our protein powder went from ~$30 for a 10lb package to now $85 for a 3.4lb package.

So we stopped and gained weight. I tried to get us to start again later, but my wife had a hard time sticking to it and kept on buying more bread and rice. We finally managed to make the switch in December. I entered ketosis, started dropping weight, and was really the best I felt in years… Then we got influenza type A. I tried to stay keto through it but eventually had to stop (could not find any keto cough drops).

Okay so that’s all done and finally we can get back on keto. Go to buy some chicken and eggs and… Out of stock everywhere. And since then when it is in stock it’s even more expensive than before.

At this point we’ve already seen the mega food corporations get slaps on the wrist for colluding on reducing supplies and hiking prices for profit- we usually find out a few years after the fact and the news usually gets buried. If only there were a way to truly hold the CEO’s and board members of those companies accountable.

I can’t say for sure, but it looks like it includes the controls based on this mock-up from IGN:

The Switch 2 is supposedly going to be 206mm L x 115mm W x 14mm D.

The Deck is 298mm x 117mm x 49mm. So still 1.5x the length of the S2 and 3x the width.

I can’t find any reports of the Switch 2’s weight, but I expect it to be significantly less than the 640g of the Deck. The Switch 2 will have a slightly larger screen, but is a smaller device overall.

But all that aside I still expect Nintendo to offer another, smaller version of the Switch 2 within a couple years. They had the Switch Lite, 2DS, DS Lite, DSi, GBA Micro, GBA SP, Gameboy Pocket, and probably more I’m not thinking of. So they will probably do a Switch 2 Lite or something.

Even outside of being kid “safe”, the Deck is too big and heavy for kids. Heck, I know a lot of adults who have that issue.

It’s also fairly expensive and while I would not call it “fragile”, I don’t the Deck would survive being owned by your average 10 year old as well as a Switch Lite does.

Ah yes, when I think of people accumulating vast amounts of capital my first thought is also… Communists.

I’d also consider the Walton family as a whole. While split up, the often join their money together and are also pretty American.

So… I know these things change over time but it seems really bizarre to list off countries famous for having too-wealthy people without naming America.

Also the whole idea of taking one of the finest, rarest specimens of something the universe produces naturally and making it ugly for the sake of these billionaires seems incredibly dumb. It’s just further contributing to the erosion of the commons.

The shows antagonists were a wealthy business man turned politician who wielded the corrupt police force to feed his own power and oppress the common folk. And while his nickname was Boss Hogg, the villain’s canon name was Jefferson Davis Hogg. Pretty literally calling the cops confederate pigs.

Definitely a lot of problematic elements to the show, but there’s some good there too. And I’m sure it influenced a ton of car action sequences for decades.

But the store piece is the only problem.

For community, there’s tons of different communities for every game and Steam is usually one of the least active anyways.

For mods, as far as I know there’s no exclusivity there. In fact, it’s kind of a pain to mod Bethesda games because they don’t go through Steam. It’s similar to DLC in that it’s just a better experience to have mod support included in the launcher.

For the launcher, that seems like once again a huge blow to consumers to have a separate steam store vs steam launcher. You can already add non-Steam games to the steam launcher or launch games without the steam launcher.

The problems identified in the article, and what they are getting sued for, are solely related to the store. So I don’t see how breaking out these supplemental features would solve that.

You can split off business units like their hardware sales or dev studios, but that isn’t going to reduce their storefront market share at all.

Are you suggesting that they just split users up randomly? That would be probably worse for consumers- suddenly the friends and communities people have built up through Steam would be fractured, and users would look to find ways to get around it.

Split up by what publishers they have deals with? Well then those new companies would only be indirect competitors, not to mention that would also be worse for consumers as I’d have to suddenly make a new account with each new platform just to keep accessing my current library.

Like… How do you want to split them up in a way that doesn’t hurt consumers and publishers more than it helps?

So what solution do you propose then?

Ideally I’d like to see media distribution be nationalized. Video streaming, audio streaming, videogames, e-books. There have been multiple cases of companies selling digital goods, then ceasing to provide those with consumers left holding the bag. Multiplayer games whose servers are gone. Movies “purchased” on Amazon that become unavailable when their agreement with the publisher expires. I am concerned about what Valve will look like when they inevitably get new leadership.

But I suffer no delusion that nationalizing that is realistic. Certainly not in the US where I live, where even libraries are under attack from conservatives. I’m doubtful that would happen anywhere else either. So what’s the next-best thing?

Seems to me like the capitalist response would be to try to encourage competition. A lot of companies have tried and failed, so I’m not sure what else can be done on that front.

Monopolies are often great for consumers… When they’re nationalized. Obviously that’s not going to happen with Valve any time soon.

What would the benefit be to breaking up Valve? How would you even go about doing that? The obvious choice is to break out different business units- break things like the hardware sales and game development into separate companies. But that still doesn’t address the issue of them having too much market share for software sales.

The next beat thing I can think of would be to have some sort of regulatory body just to place restrictions on the industry. Which, of course, would vary from country to country, and would probably have to include all of their competitors: Epic, GoG, and the various publisher-specific stores, maybe even other storefronts like Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Google, and Apple. It would be hard not to also hit the mobile games industry too (which, to be fair, might be a good thing). But this kind of thing is usually reserved for things like utilities, communications, financial markets, etc. Such an organization for a luxury recreationak market… I have to wonder how much political appetite there really would be for that? Is that really what people want their governments to be focusing on?

A few years ago my friend’s father passed away. My friend’s mother continued to live in the house for another year or so. She never worked and had to eventually sell the house and downsize.

My friend had referred to her mother as a hoarder before. I’ve seen the reality TV shows about hoarders. But you don’t really understand just how bad the problem is until you spend several days helping your friend clean out their childhood home for sale, filling up several dumpster bags worth of… Stuff. Apparently the mother has always had some mental health problems and a shopping addiction, but spending over a year alone in that house drove her off the deep end.

We could have opened an entire new Harbor Freight store. There were clothes in sizes I didn’t know existed. My wife casually found a pistol just shoved in a random box. It was madness.
