Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you associate some words with completely unrelated words/ideas?
1·3 小时前nepotism, I think of the Greek god Poseidon.
But that is easily explained:
Once upon a time you have played with anagrams. These are not exactly anagrams, but you wished they were. And so you decided to remember it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you associate some words with completely unrelated words/ideas?
1·3 小时前A few word pairs that are tightly related in my brain, but unrelated to everybody else.
I won’t tell them.
I use them for the “secret question / secret answer” thing with passwords. I will not forget them.
When the question is only one word, and the answer is unrelated, then no hacker can ever guess the correct answer.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•You're given $20,000 USD (or the equivalent in your local currency) to spend, but anything still left by the end of the day you lose for good. What are you spending it on?
2·4 小时前A small box garage in the middle of the city. Then rent it out for a nice extra income.

Zwuzelmaus@feddit.orgtoHome Improvement@lemmy.world•Electricians of Lemmy: Planning a kitchen re-wire. Sub-panel or direct run?
4·17 小时前In a kitchen you want 3 phases, and at least 5 breakers:
3 phases with a breaker on each for the stove
1 breaker for appliances and other wall sockets
1 breaker for ceiling light and maybe other lightsSo when a breaker for the stove blows, then the rest of your kitchen is unaffected, etc.

5·1 天前When I was about 21 years old, I learned that I have a half-brother (who lives elsewhere). But I learned it from my older sister. I did not dare to ask my father what he did etc.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Is self-hosting becoming too gatekept by power users?English
1·2 天前Just like not every Linux user compiles from source, but they’re still Linux users.
Yes. In theory.
But in practise, this is the one great unsolved mystery of Linux.
And maybe self hosting has a similar one.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are physical mail generally not under surveillance? If everyone suddently ditched electronic communications and start writing letters, would governments be able to surveil everyone? (Is it practial?)
1·2 天前In a large country, the percentage of mail that crosses their border is much lower than in a small country.

6·2 天前would governments be able to surveil everyone? (Is it practial?)
The GDR has done it.
There were no computers at that time. All mail was physical. They did not surveil really everyone, but many targeted people, and presumably all letters from/to the West.
Today with strong computers and AI to scan through all texts, even hand writing, it would be feasable to do even more than that.

Technology@lemmy.world•Data centers in Silicon Valley stand empty, awaiting powerEnglish
7·3 天前Obviously they didn’t want to pay appropriately for the power.
Note that this is not a datacenter, only a new, empty building where somebody had the idea of putting datacenters in.

35·4 天前90% of the fediverse are acually bots, but you have severe social anxiety.
In this case, it is very likely that you are a bot yourself.
You must be a US american. They always dream of running away from all their mistakes :)

Do you remember “Blade Runner”? People wanted to know from robots what they are: human or robot.
Today robots are demanding this from people.
