  • I think this post would be more appropriate to discuss on /c/Fediverse@Lemmy.world but as the only current active mod in this comm I’ll give my five cents.

This whole thing is way too complicated for the fediverse in its current state, with most of our small communities having maybe only a handful of active users. Besides, many instances are hosted with very differing aims. This sort of system might make sense on an instance like lemmy.world, run by the fedihosting foundation, but many others are run by private individuals as hobby projects. Whilst I think it is a good idea for both admins and mods to be held to the same standard as everybody else, I think it is more important to encourage a diversity of instances.

  • Feel free to contribute on here instead and/or come with improvement suggestions :)

I’ve mostly just been looking out to keep up common sense moderation in the comm since r34 content is a returning interest of mine. Usually keeping iffy content away and enforcing the basic gender tags common across the rest of lemmynsfw.

P.s, since this technically falls under discussion, pretty please tag the post [Meta] as mentioned in the sidebar.

  • For sure, ideally this could be controlled on a community - by community basis, but AFAIK that isn’t an option with lemmy, hence my suggestion of retaining downvotes only on comments.

This would protect contributors from essentially all unwanted negative attention (since derogatory comments are against guidelines), whilst keeping negative feedback for a part of the content where folks have to actively engage to participate. (You won’t even be in the comments if you didn’t find the post interesting & engaging)

  • IMO up & downvotes both have a purpose. Content can be disagreeable without being rule-breaking. I’ve certainly found downvotes a helpful indicator in the past, occasionally highlighting a poor formulation that caused one of my comments to be misunderstood.

A potential middle-ground might be disallowing downvotes on post, but permitting them on comments?

Either way, big thanks to you for hosting the site, and hope the donations situation gets resolved!
