Fair enough!
It’s still possible, in my opinion, to visit as a “tourist” (I live in Haarlem now, so technically I’m a tourist when I go) and avoid all the trashy stuff. You can seek out the cool little neighborhoods like the Jordaan or de Pijp.
A tool using primate, probably friendly. Likes cookies.

Oh simply be polite and most of all have a sense of your surroundings/situational awareness, i.e., don’t get in the way. You probably want to spend as little time in the main “downtown” area (roughly central station to the Rokin) as possible.
Although everyone under 80 years old speak near-native English (I exaggerate), you’ll endear yourself by learning to say good morning, good evening, thanks, and please in Dutch and to start conversations by asking “Is English ok?” in Dutch.
Basically just don’t be a jerk and the native Amsterdamers will happily take your holiday money.
This bullshit just infuriations me. Nearly every country ALREADY HAS LAWS that prevent minors from buying vapes (and cigarettes, etc.) Just enforce the damn rules rather than turn two pack a day people back to two pack a day people and then have to pay for their cancer treatment.
Jesus these fucks are dumb.
Well, it’s more like we don’t want them to come here.
And this is the real cynic in me, but the dad will be enthusiastic about going to Little Timmy’s games, and in the end, that’s probably all Little Timmy wants: some time with dad where dad’s happy to be with him.
Haven’t been there in a decade despite having been there for a decade and helping many real people in real life from there, and I’d have to say: depends on who the target of the violence is and whether or not it’s phased in the subjunctive mood.
Well you have just described Metafilter. I’m a liberal a lefty as can be, and eventually even I got tired of the drama and obvious virtue signaling. And at the end of the day, drama and less-than-appropriate virtue signaling were what the mods wanted.
I’m going to presume you just kind of phrased this badly and not downvote you.
This is a good answer and probably the right solution (still not 100% convinced defederating isn’t, ultimately, going to be the answer though).
But your Jane/Joe Average User doesn’t look to see which instance that pr0n cute picture of a cat holding a teddy bear is on. They probably don’t even understand the concept of different instances showing content from others. Hell I’ve been online since 1992 and it took me a couple of days to get my head around it when I joined.
So I think we need some kind of step by step “If you see X, then do Y” sticked to the instances that care about this for the people who (like me) do care about this issue.
Department of war math represent.
Not OP but can I just comment that there are some high-quality answers here, good discussion. Thanks!
Comment saved, thanks.
This is some very good advice. My eldest son is on the spectrum (also low needs now, but was moderate for a while), and he has found D&D groups to be just stimulating enough. Just as an example.
Tech can be your friend here. You can search for people with similar interests. For example, here in NL there’s an app for people who want to go on a walk (obviously, safety first of course). The point being use tech to help you discover stuff you like then find other people who are into the same thing.
That’s enough internet for today.
If you finally achieve this please make a post about how you did it!
Not so much as a secret Trump supporter as helping to muddy the waters. There are many, many valid criticisms to make of Biden (and even more things to validly praise, oddly enough never covered in the press…)
I think the problem people have with criticism, valid or otherwise, is that this is no time to raise any doubt whatsoever about who should be president next. Yes, that’s a propagandist’s position. It’s also the only morally and practically correct one given the existential challenge we face.
Eh? A broken clock and all?
I’m not sure your grasp of the situation in BE in WWI or NL in WWII is …accurate. It’s certainly no longer relevant.
Second time for me. I migrated about ten years ago from Metafilter, which I eventually rage quit. That really fucking hurt, and Reddit filed that niche in my life (but not the meeting IRL or helping IRL part).
Now I’ve had to go through the same thing with Reddit. I’m into Lemmy, Mastodon, and Bluesky, but it’s not the same. I hope it’s just not the same, yet.
Yeah for sure, avoid big groups of British English speaking dudes for sure (and some of my best friends are English and they would agree!)
