  • Nothing irrational about it, the man’s an asshole without scientific training of any kind. He didn’t really do anything except for yell “FAKE!” loudly and run a sham contest.

And yet everyone treats him like a paragon of logic. Gimme a fucking break. The man was a pseudo-skeptic who just yelled at anything he didn’t like and that was enough. He gave the impression that showmanship and flair was more important than data. It is for this reason he was kicked out of the very skeptic organization he helped found, no not JREF, the other one that he served on with Susan Blackmore, a skeptic I actually do respect.

No Carl Sagan got Randi right when he called him an angry little man in his book the Demon Haunted World.

James was a charlatan, he acted like a charlatan, called himself a charlatan, brought nothing to the table outside of his bad attitude and a rigged contest that serves no purpose outside of a headline. He was not a scientist and should not be honored as one.

No, this is the only link I should have bothered giving you, because I wasn’t the only one who noticed that Randi was a fraud - https://mitch-horowitz-nyc.medium.com/the-man-who-destroyed-skepticism-be35a6e5c5e4 - He was quick witted and good at talking to the press, but a real scientist he was not!

And yes, he did serve as science advisor on the False Memory Foundation? Don’t know what that is? It was a group of pedophiles accused by relatives of sexual assault, so they formed an organization that without any real evidence of any kind dedicated to gaslighting women into thinking their own sexual traumas were the result of false memory and not any real rapist.

  • You don’t get it, it wasn’t just religious nuts believing in the Satanic Panic, today only Fundies and Evangelicals go for that nonsense. Back then this was a mainstream belief, heck Christianity itself was incredibly mainstream… Richard Dawkins hadn’t helped start New Atheism yet, no one knew who he was. Churches weren’t in decline yet, you were there every Sunday or you were seen as weird.

The concept of not believing in a God was itself very strange and novel. Not believing in psychic powers or astrology made you look close minded and dumb in mainstream eyes.

Now you are allowed to not believe in magic, in fact it seems to be slowly becoming the dominant position.

I’m sure there’s similar madness today and it will be looked upon as nonsense by hindsight. I know for a fact Donald Trump will be remembered as one of the worst presidents in America’s History if America is even still around
