  • I must say I e never played Skyrim, and I didn’t know how beautiful it could be. I might have to have a closer look.

I play a game called “The Long Dark”, and the first screenshot with the aurora made me do a double take. In that game you are alone in a northern Canadian region that has been abandoned both due to economics as well as some in game magic that makes electricity not work. The survival mode is just “live as long as you can, then die.” It’s permadeath and can be incredibly frustrating and cruel, but the beauty in that game is unreal. I’ve ended a 6 day run (nothing to me now, but a big acheivement at the time) because I was watching the Aurora on a clear winter night. The music was somber and I thought I might freeze to death as I crossed this long rope bridge. I should have been looking at the bridge, because staring up into the sky I suddenly was getting further away from it … It was maybe a 3 second fall as I realized I either walked off the bridge or maybe there was a gap or something.

“You have faded into the long dark.” -wasn’t even mad.

  • I don’t know. Listening to PP on the radio the other day was, as usual, brain cell melting.

“We are under attack from the south! They are putting America first! Therefore We need to"put Canada First!” (Not a direct quote, was a soundbite on the 4pm CBC news radio as best I recall it)

Sir… When your idiot neighbours are in a democratic spiral to hell, maybe DON’T try and steal their slogans. I’m no political analyst but it’s …possible… the strategies they are using are at best ineffective.

So my truck was in for repairs from an accident. My insurance company covered the rental and they gave me a 2024 Super Duty Twin King Pro XLT-V8 Unlimited. It was stupid. Huge new truck. Probably $80k CAD new. I take a lot of pride in my 5 year old baby workhorse, so this sucked.

I stopped at an unfamiliar grocery store on my way home from work one day and was inside for 15 minutes.

Someone keyed the driver’s side of my rental hitting every panel front to back. At first I thought I parked like an ass or something, but I was a ways away from any other cars, I had parked so far away because the thing was so big…

My guess is some poor schmuck was walking to the liquor store in the same plaza, saw a truck that he couldn’t buy with 5 years salary, and just thought “fuck this guy”

Well, because my insurance paid for the rental, the visa I used as a “deposit” didn’t cover the insurance. Apparently it wouldn’t have covered a truck anyways. So it wasn’t covered, and the rental company did me no favours even after I had reported it immediately and explained what happened and had a police report.

So I was out around $1300. I know key dude probably thought I “deserved it”. I assure you, I did not. :(

  • I know this goes against the spirit of … Bachelor frog meme?

But that was a very effective way my mom suggested to combat my ache. Every night I’d take my fresh t-shirt for the next day and put it over my pillow case. It meant that my face was always getting a fresh pillowcase without me needing to have 75 pillowcases to wash for every day.

I did also try using the shirt at the end of the day (because when my ache got bad I’d have blood spots and stuff on my shirts and couldn’t wear them) but it didn’t feel as clean and nice, so I’d just occasionally put a shirt on the pillow and then if it was soiled that first night id wear a different shirt and leave that one on the pillow for another day or 2.

Fresh pillow cases and sheets are a magical thing.

  • Their point was to whine. If we need to buy local and OP’s intention is not just to piss and moan they could give a single example, or link to a list, or start a little data base.

Even just list some tips to start figuring it out for yourself, like "go to your fridge and take out the most expensive/most used items. Find the label and figure out where it’s from. If it isn’t from Canada do a google search for “local mayonnaise” or “Ontario made cheese”, or “Toronto hot sauce” and start looking for alternatives. They aren’t the single only person living in Montreal on Lemmy, and even if they were, their recommendation could lead others to search in a different way for what they need.

I’m not disagreeing with anything said, I’m trying to encourage the whiners to also contribute, as I have been as I whine about whiners. It should be a requirement.

  • Just try. Instead of whining uselessly. A single Canadian made product you enjoy. You don’t have one? Then you are the problem.

You don’t want people buying big name brands. You say everyone else is stupid. Fucking pull your weight then.

I’m sitting on the can and I can see ‘true earth’ brand toilet cleaner is made in Canada. They have laundry soap and dish soap too.

And I know my fancy Lush shampoos and stuff are super local, if you can afford it.

And just in case laundry detergent isn’t on the tariff list I have Okazu miso chili oil on my counter at all times.

And Matty Matheson has a brand of kraft dinner that’s pretty dang good and not that much more expensive than KD.

So what about you? Gonna keep whining about a shitty list or are you gonna post something helpful? If everyone else in this thread did the same thing we’d have something to work with.

  • While it’s impossible to know what this shit bag wants, I listened to an interview with some asshole from some conservative think tank and by the end my vibe was this:

America is big and strong. In the past America has played fair to the benefit of everyone. But now America wants to be the biggest and strongest, and everyone else needs to be subservient to the American Masters.

Basically America wants to be a bully by impose tariffs and not having the other countries return the favour. America wants every other country to bend over and take whatever tariffs America wants to impose without consequence

In this perfect world it would allow America to start building up their own companies, forcing consumers to buy American and drive demand for new manufacturing businesses.

Of course this all STILL falls apart with just a few basic questions like “if Canada does not impose counter tariffs (and even if they do) their economy will suffer greatly. Is it important for the USA to have economically healthy allies?” and “Why jack the prices so suddenly without allowing time and investing money in these new business that will be needed?”
