I don’t see “the USA”, as in the Federal Government, running a DDoS against a Chinese AI company. I can see some private companies doing it but now we’re talking about a conspiracy. Without having more verifiable facts I think Occum’s Razor comes down on “Internet Hug of Death” as the most likely explanation since it doesn’t require multiple bad actors involved in a hidden conspiracy.

In the end I’m honestly not disturbed by DeepSeek. I commented elsewhere that this kind of innovation driven market disruption is normal in the tech industry. It’s been happening since at least the early 1950s when companies and even countries were contesting to be the top supplier of mainframes. (If you want more on this hit up the youtube channel “Asianometry”, he’s got a great series of informative videos on it.)

At this point it should be expected that any new field of tech, such as AI, will have at least two disruption events in the first decade (ish) after becoming mainstream. After that the market and the number of companies in it will expand for another decade(ish) and then as that market matures those companies will start down a path of consolidation.

So everyone, mostly investors, need to stop and breath for a few minutes. The rest of us can smile and get ready for the upcoming improvements.

Meh, this is how Tech has always worked. The list of companies that foresaw endless growth due to a temporary market advantage is long. As an example ask Intel how their DRAM production is looking these days. They were dominating the market with it in early 70s but by the early 80s they’d been entirely supplanted. Anybody still buying new ZIP drives? How much market relevance does MySpace or Napster have these days?

This particular stock “crash” is really just an investor driven blip that Nvidia will quickly put in its rearview mirror but its a signal flare that the AI Market in general and the GPU market in particular is ripe and waiting for disruption. That disruption is coming and it will arrive quicker than most realize.

Almost. Any drone that weighs more than .55lbs must be registered with the FAA and as part of that it is required to be compliant with RemoteID. RemoteID requires the drone to broadcast both its identification and location of the control station.

If it’s being operated over a home then it will almost certainly have to follow the rules on Operation Over People and those can be quite restrictive, especially for drones that weigh more than .55lbs.

There ARE Federal Rules for this in the United States, drone operators cannot legally fly any type of drone anywhere they want at any time.

I’m somewhat surprised that there’s no purchasable solution to this problem as all of the technology to make a short range drone interdiction system already exist. To detect one all that’s necessary is an appropriate camera setup and a system hooked to it capable of recognizing them, both of which are already prevalent in the market. Add an inexpensive laser range finder so the system can know if the drone is truly over your property and at an altitude acceptable for interception.

Once that’s done it becomes a matter of how to interdict the drone. One relatively safe option would be for the system to deploy a high speed short range interdiction drone to overfly the other drone and drop something on top of it meant to snarl its rotors, for instance fishing line with weights.

None of that is necessarily easy but its certainly doable.

I would have said that too…until I watched the Ryan McBeth video about it. I’m still not sure he’s correct but he does make a convincing argument that were not only in it but that it started in 2014.

Since the study was from Europe I’m going to assume that the primary thing holding people back from plugging in is that they can’t. Many, if not most, of them will live in multi-tenant dwellings and most of those dwellings likely don’t have the infrastructure to make it possible.

Citation needed. In 2022 the US had 50 Batteries spread between 16 Battalions. It’s pretty unlikely we’ve more than doubled that number in the last 18 months, let alone built that many just to have them sitting around doing nothing.

The damn things cost 1.1 Billion each to build plus another 690 Million to fully load for a combined total (each) of something like 1.7 Billion dollars or 170 Billion dollars for 100 of them. Wow, that’s a pretty narrow gap. The 80386 started mass production in 1986 and Windows 3.0 (the first actually usable one) came out in 1990.

I refused to use Windows until Win95 and even then I was experimenting with OS/2. In 1997 I installed Slack 3.4 and have been around every since. I’m currently running Linux Mint but I sorta miss SuSe and may go back to it.
