A country that would rather keep a football program than an arts program is always going to suffer.

I was discussing the same thing with a friend just this morning. This isn’t anything new. It’s just where other administrations know the phrase soft power and were able to use it effectively, Trump is a blunt and stupid human who doesn’t know anything as complex as modern diplomacy.
In that way, I unironically think that Trump may be the best thing to happen. He’s taken the mask off. The world can’t ignore it anymore or pretend it isn’t happening so long as they still get their iphones every year. It’s a kick in the pants for all of us.
My interpretation is they are using the data to see what went right with the landing (terrain, speed, altitude, when to fire braking engines, etc…) in the hopes of being able to reproduce safe landings on a consistent basis. Keep in mind the vast majority of landings still crash, and that can’t happen when humans get up there.
In other words, you can’t be good unless you know what good looks like. Since this landing was a success, they want to know what contributed to that so they can do it again instead of say…using the same design that made your previous lander topple over…ahem…
They already tried it. It’s called Threads. It exists. People use it. And other instances have the choice to simply not federate with them.
To me (as unpopular as this sounds) that’s the beautiful thing about FOSS and about Federation in particular. No one is stopping anyone from creating their own instance. Even Corporations.
It’s the ultimate expression of “Anyone can do what they want, say what they want, believe what they want…but no one else is in any way obligated to listen to them/federate with them”
I know of companies that host small mastodon instances for their staff to communicate back and forth. I know of similar setups with lemmy instances. Anyone can use the technology for anything they wish to.
Sadly, your father was absolutely correct. I like to think things have improved.
People need to wake up and realise that there isn’t going to BE a “next election”. At least not a fair one. Trump will win it the same way Putin and Orlov “win”.
The sooner American’s wake the fuck up to this and deal with it in the inevitable way, the sooner the planet can be done with this nightmare.
Now if you add a sliver of curiosity toward learning rudimentary French from the ROC
Technically we (rest of Canada) should already have rudimentary French since (at least when I was highschool) it was a core curriculum until the 9th grade, after which we had the choice to drop it or keep taking it as an elective. I stupidly chose not to continue, but still have the ability to understand about half of what I read or hear.
The problem in the ROC is the same problem that I have with my Portuguese; we simply don’t speak it enough after highschool to maintain that base level of knowledge. It’s something that I think most of us can dig up with some effort, but it doesn’t flow off the tongue unless you’re using it on a regular basis.
Took me a second to realise it’s not “Theme at Bridge” and think “What the 'eff does that mean??!!”
Self Explanatory actually.
It’s still a long way to go. But it feels like we’re doing a decent job of preventing destabilization from happening.
If Trump’s hope is that hurting the economy somehow makes people switch to the Conservatives who will lick his mushroom and eventually hand over the keys, he’s not aware of how much of a laughingstock P.P. Poppinfresh has become the moment Trudeau announced his resignation.
We have our share of Maple Maga to be sure, but they are both fewer in number, and mostly confined to two inbred provinces that constantly share their populations back and forth like kissing cousins.
I think Trump was not expecting the reaction he got when he hit us.
That’s exactly how most Germans did respond to it back then too.
Pretend it wasn’t happening. Pretend they didn’t know about it. Until they get slapped in the face with reality when the allies show up and force march them to dig the graves at the concentration camps.
poking fun at its cultish, toxic community.
I don’t feel like I’m in a cult.
But then again…that’s just what someone in a cult would say…
Oh…God…NOOOOOOOO!!!
/s (obviously)
Because you can’t cosplay the Robber Baron age without bringing back consumption…
What Trump can or can’t do is absolutely meaningless to him. He doesn’t care. Chaos is the point.
I think Ontario has already paused the Export tax unfortunately. But I would absolutely call his bluff. An attack on Canada would mean a full-blown article 5 crisis before Trump has all of the cards that he wants. While he might be that stupid. Others in his administration aren’t.
Just in case, a good show from Carney would be to deploy the military to the area because of an increased threat of terrorism.
Yep. Nothing fishy at all here. Nosiree.
This quote in an article from 2012 by Katie Billotte has always stuck with me.
This war on the liberal arts is born from the same desire that produces voter ID laws: a desire to limit democratic participation. The goal of a liberal arts education was never primarily direct economic benefit for the recipient or even the sort of personal/spiritual development about which many like to wax lyrically. The purpose of a liberal arts education was always meant to be a political education. The Latin ars liberalis refers to the skills required of a free man – that is the skills of a citizen. The Latin word ars and its Greek equivalent techne do not mean art in a modern sense. Instead the word refers to a craft or a skill. Thus, history, rhetoric and literature were seen as the skills a citizen needed for his job: governing.
Still one of the best threats in film.
This whole movie is endlessly quotable.
In before Poppinfresh goes on the stump to call Trudeau a thief of government property.
Is anyone else actually surprised that Orange fuck-face didn’t immediately rename it the “Trump Center”?
