The current status of undocumented workers is by design: they are underpaid, disempowered and vulnerable. If they try to form unions, they can be deported at no cost to the exploitative scumbags who hire them. If the employer wants to get away with a bit of wage theft, they just have to call la migra. Any future arrangement will replicate this situation, possibly with even more precariousness for the immigrants.

If they get treated like this once and then get the “opportunity” to come back on a provisional basis what’s going to stop this administration from making camps where they are allowed to live only to work on a farm with no time off? What about the off seasons? Do they still get to stay? The ones who’ve left are the lucky ones. If history has taught us anything is that deporting en mass is just the first step. If nothing causes a major change in leadership, well, it’s been a good run. Hopefully, from the ashes rises something better.
