Had a busy week, wasn’t able to read much. Couldn’t even go through all the responses from last week’s thread.
Still reading Five on a Treasure Island by Enid Blyton. I have read first 40 pages or so, and the book hold up pretty well. I am enjoying what I am reading, and my kid is loving them too.
Also started The Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson. Book 1 of 2nd era of Mistborn. I don’t start multiple books at a time, but I had to go somewhere where I would have few hours free, and I realised I would finish the Famous Five book in an hour or so, and didn’t want to take multiple books, so took Alloy of Law with me.
I am about half-way done, and it’s interesting to see how the world has evolved, and the myths / history of the world. Also the changes in allomancy are interesting. Looking forward to finishing it soon.
What about all of you? What have you been reading or listening to lately?
There’s a Midyear Bingo check-in post, do take a look. Even if you haven’t started this year’s Book Bingo, you can still join, as there are still 6 months remaining only 5 months to go!
For details, you can checkout the initial Book Bingo, and it’s Recommendation Post . Links are also present in our community sidebar.
Almost done with The Hydrogen Sonata by Banks. Not sure yet what to read afterwards. It’s a luxury problem. I have too many books I still have to read. Choices, choices.
I recently finished the Silo trilogy by Hugh Howey and absolutely hated it lol so now I’m doing the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson and absolutely loving it
Funny: I disliked the Mars trilogy and enjoyed the Silo trilogy.
Is this one of those where the show is better than the book?
I have not seen the show but I did find out about the series via hearing about the show. I dont think ill be watching it
I have heard they changed somethings in the show, and all my friends seem to love it. (None of them have read the books)
I haven’t watched it yet though, don’t watch much shows anyways, and wanted to read the books first even if I do watch it.
I’m just about done with Shaman by Kim Stanley Robinson, I’ve read most of his work and this might be his strongest work. It’s clear from the Mars and science in the capitol trilogies that the man is obsessed with stone age culture so it’s an obvious choice of setting for him and unlike much of the rest of his work it’s a simple and self contained story.
I’m also a few chapters into Julia by Sandra Newman, a retelling of 1984 from Julia’s pov. Very evocative and well written so far, looking forward to the rest of the book.
A re-read of Dune Messiah. Plots within plots. I usually do a re-read between new (to me) books. My last book was Stormlight 5, I’m still digesting it, but Dune is probably doing to be finished tonight.
I my plan was to read Parable of the Talents next, it’s my first time through Earthseed. The first one, Parable of the Sower, I struggled to start just because I heard the world is bleak and I didn’t want more bleak in my life. The world is certainly bleak.
If not Earthseed I might start re-reading Mistborn for Era 3 while thinking of something new to read. I did two new books back-back Parable and Stormlight, so it’s only reasonable to do 2 re-reads next.
- The Critique of Digital Capitalism by Eileen Joy
- Shakespeare for Children by Charles and Mary Lamb
Mary Lamb sounds like such a made up name.
How is the Shakespeare book?
Lol. I guess she married into it.
I just started it and so far it’s ok. It seems to be lacking some description and details to help young readers internalize the material. At least for the tempest it seems to just gloss over a lot of things which is fine if the goal is to summarize but since the goal is to make Shakespeare accessible to children it makes it not very memorable. But haven’t read it all yet.
Ah, okay. Thanks for the input.
Just finished Expanse 7 (and 7.5) novella. Loved them. Number 7 has been my favourite so far. Also just finished 3 novellas making a trilogy called Binti. I try to read authors different gender or race from me. Binti trilogy was a fun and interesting read. If you don’t love it, after book 1 (around 150 pages) it wraps up in a way you wouldn’t need to read the others.
Reading my first non-fic for the year now. I usually try to read 4-6 non-fiction out of my 30-35/year. Reading “Down With the System” by Serj Tankian. I’ll probably make “Walking Disaster” and “Smart, but Scattered” two of my others this year.
Waiting for my reading buddy to catch up so I can start Stormlight 5 and read “Between Two Fires”
I was just thinking about messaging you the other day, to see where you disappeared to!
Will look up Binti novellas. How’s Down With the System?
Haha the amount of time I spend on Lemmy Ebbs and flows depending on work, family, how angry I want to be, Etc.
Down with the System has been a good read. I saw a system live when I was young, and was very much into the punk rock, Alt rock, numetal scene. When I went to University, and later education, a lot of that stuff got put behind me for some reason. And the last 5 years, my children have been asking what music I like to listen to and my middle child is very much taking a liking to the aggressive nature of the music that I like.
So not only has reading this book being enjoyable because I quite like the band, it’s had a bit of a Renaissance on my music habits.
From a literary standpoint, it’s been very interesting to hear the band came to be on how much Armenia and the Armenian Genocide has played a role in their lives (granted I’m only ¾ done).
The other book I’m excited about comma Is Joe Abercrombie’s “Devils” book. I still have the last Trilogy For the first law world Comma but this one looks promising too.
Edit: while plot wise, not everyone loves the mistborn second era as much as the first. But for me, the characters were so much better and I enjoyed the second era more than the first. Your mileage may vary, but I love Wayne
Hehe, glad to see you rediscovering your favourite music.
I think I am done with Abercrombie, as much as I like his books, he is too cruel to his characters. Let me know if Devils is any different, but I doubt so.
Well, the second era isn’t as dreary, so that’s a big plus for me. I do miss the complete badass-ness and power of Vin and Kelsier though. But I have just read the first book yet, so let’s see how it progresses. Liking Wayne quite a bit. He is weird. 😀
