Washington is concerned about Islamic militants in the Sahel region, who may be able to expand without the presence of U.S. forces and intelligence capabilities.

LMAO. You mean the same ones that have been lingering in the region for all these years that US troops have been stationed in the region? The same ones that are probably being bankrolled by the US? The ones that are now getting their asses kicked by local forces and Wagner?

Read: Washington threatens to provide arms and funding to Islamic militants (even more than they already do) should the government of Niger refuse to comply

I think the speculation was that Prigozhin cut a deal through Lukashenko that the old hat guys from Wagner would get deployed out of Ukraine where they had been taking heavy causalities back to easier work overseas. The newer recruits to Wagner from the Donbass would go into the Russian army. Though how much of that held up after “his pilot died of vaccine induced myocarditis”, I don’t know.

They probably integrated the bulk of their forces in Ukraine, but the mercenary force is a very useful tool, so they just reined it tightly to their ministry of defense.
