They sure are given that their standard of living keeps getting better each and every year. Sadly same can’t be said for people living under western regimes.
The government continued to stifle criticism of its policies and actions and discussion of topics considered sensitive through increasingly pervasive online censorship. Government critics, human rights defenders, pro-democracy activists and religious leaders and practitioners were among those subjected to arbitrary arrest and detention. Systematic repression of ethnic minorities in Xinjiang and Tibet continued. Authorities attempted to prevent the publication of an OHCHR report documenting potential crimes against humanity and other international crimes in Xinjiang… Despite some positive policy commitments, including to increased use of renewables, China’s CO2 reduction targets were rated as “highly insufficient” and coal production increased.
China remained the world’s leading executioner, although the government continued to classify statistics for executions and death sentences as “state secrets”. The death penalty remained applicable for 46 offences, including non-lethal offences that do not meet the threshold of the “most serious crimes” under international law and standards.
Meanwhile, there is a political angle around the narrative around Xinjiang. For example, here’s George Bush’s chief of staff openly saying that US wants to destabilize the region, and NED recently admitting to funding Uyghur separatism for the past 16 years on their own official Twitter page. An ex-CIA operative details US operations radicalizing and training terrorists in the region in this book. Here’s an excerpt:
A country who refuses to reveal how many people the execute but is estimated thousands per year per Amnesty International, a organization you assert to be biased with absolutely no proof whatsoever. If that number is false, why wouldn’t China release the numbers?
Look, I’m not here just to pick on China, western governments suck too, especially the US. And China has done some good things to get more people out of poverty, and I applaud that. But to hold up China as a paragon of virtue, given their history of censorship, brutality, and lack of transparency seems particularly heinous to me.
Uighurs and Tibetans really feeling those wins rn.

What I’ve got are basic facts of the situation.
Accusations originate entirely from the west while Muslim majority countries support China, and their leaders have visited Xinjiang many times.
Here’s an account from a Pakistani journalist who has been all over Xinjiang (which borders Pakistan) claims that western media reports on “atrocities” are lies. https://dailytimes.com.pk/723317/exposing-the-occidents-baseless-lies-about-xinjiang/
Also notable that whenever western media actually deigns to visit Xinjiang, which is not often, they’re unable to produce support for any of their claims of mass imprisonment and oppression, so they opt for insinuations instead https://apnews.com/article/coronavirus-pandemic-lifestyle-china-health-travel-7a6967f335f97ca868cc618ea84b98b9

US has been stoking terrorism in the region while they’ve been running a propaganda campaign against China in the west. In fact, US even classified Uyghur separatists as a terrorist group at one point https://www.mintpressnews.com/us-was-at-war-uyghur-terrorists-now-claims-etim-doesnt-exist/276916/
Now, let’s look at what’s actually happening with renewables and energy transition in China.
Emissions in China have now entered structural decline
Clean energy was top driver of China’s economic growth in 2023 https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-clean-energy-was-top-driver-of-chinas-economic-growth-in-2023/
China has an actual plan for phasing out fossil fuel usage that they are implementing, short term use of coal is in line with that plan, pretending that this is some gotcha is either ignorant or dishonest https://www.visualcapitalist.com/chinas-energy-transition-in-5-charts/
Here’s a study showing that coal use in China is in line with their transition plan https://www.carbonbrief.org/chinas-2060-climate-pledge-is-largely-consistent-with-1-5c-goal-study-finds
Looks like we’re accepting The Guardian as a source:

Here’s China giving the death penalty to a pro-democracy blogger:
