  • I don’t feel like it’s fair to compare the newer DOOM games to one another. They’re more like different games than sequels.

DOOM 2016 is an excellent reboot, fairly grounded.

DOOM Eternal is a movement shooter / platformer with a ton of verticality in the areas.

I haven’t played it yet, but I get the impression Dark Ages is even more grounded and geared towards wide open arenas. Almost gives me Serious Sam vibes.

I’ve had a ton of fun with Eternal and I’m sure you’ll get more than your $4 worth!

  • What’s your threshold for “old”?

Couple more demanding games / difficult to run at launch that come to mind for me:

Cyberpunk 2077 is about to be 5 years old (2020)

Red Dead Redemption 2’s PC Port is about to be 6 years old (late 2019)

Metro Exodus is coming up on 7 (early 2019)

If this is your first foray into Ray Tracing capable cards, Control makes good use if that feature (Mid 2019)

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider was used as a benchmark for years (2018)

As you start going older than that, even the Steam Deck ends up being very capable.

People had a rough time with Batman Arkham Knight, still looks pretty IMO (2015)

If you’re looking for games that are coming up on 15-20 years old, like Crysis:

    S.T.A.L.K.E.R (2007)

    Metro 2033 (2010)

    Rage (2011)

    Doom 3 (2005)

    Elder Scrolls Oblivion (2006)

  • I agree, that would be my preference too.

But Windows isn’t built for advanced users, it’s a mainstream OS built for the average consumer. What you and I might see as “taking control away from the user”, the general population might see as “one less confusing choice” if only they had a clue.

I’m glad you’ve finally found your home with Linux :) There are still too many frustrated Windows power users who still don’t know how much better they could have it. I use a bit of everything, btw. Platform agnostic with more Windows/MacOS experience only because the nature of my job demands it.

  • I manage a ton of consumer Windows devices and have seldom seen this message. It also hasn’t ever appeared on any of the multitude my own Windows devices that I’m using for hours every week.

I have also seen this message with regard to other file associations like .PDF, certain image formats, and archive formats.

Microsoft has plenty of dark patterns to try and loop users back into Microsoft Edge, but I don’t think this is one of them.

Edge just happens to be the “constant” in an ocean of variables because it ships with the OS and is integrated into so many other facets. The broken .PDF association also defaults back Edge, Image formats to Photos, Archive formats to the Explorer archive utility. I’m sure .txt would scale back to Notepad.

  • And in yet another followup post, he clarified that is not actually the case

As this post has been incorrectly reported: Just to clarify the data usage is correctly attributed to the IP address used by the LG Washing Machine. I am monitoring the data usage more closely. What I was referencing in inaccuracy of the router is the attribution of 622 bytes to Apple iMessage. The rogue process is likely using the same port (5223) as iMessage and ASUS router is wrongly attributing it to that. There was gigabytes of data being uploaded from the IP address of the washer. I have segregated this device to its own network and logging data usage.

All I did was scroll down / read further in the link you shared, btw

  • status line at the bottom is inefficient

One is a path bar, the other is a status bar. The path bar shows you the full filesystem path to where you are, the status bar shows you details like object count and size. They’re independent things that can be separately enabled / disabled through the view menu.

Also, that’s not a close button. It’s a pencil with a slash through it, the user does not have write permission for that location.

  • This.

I had someone merge lanes into me. I sensed it, evaded them, and drove up onto the curb. Wound up with a couple thousand dollars in damage - new tire, wheel, rim, control arm, and strut.

Without video footage of the incident, I would have had to rely on my insurance company taking my word for it.

Catalyst for the purchase was many years earlier where I was hit by a drunk driver at 2AM while making a left turn at an intersection, it was raining and they did not have their headlights on, they had two friends with them and I was alone.

Insurance ruled that, based on the point of impact, I was at fault.

  • The original pilot / first episode, Serenity (not to be confused as the movie of the same name), is an hour and a half long and sets up a ton of context for the rest of the show.

Instead, Fox aired the second episode, The Train Job, as a pilot.

Serenity was ultimately aired as a series finale / 11th episode, the show was cancelled before he three remaining episodes were aired.

If you haven’t seen Firefly, I strongly recommend that you start with the Serenity Episode. You’ll know by the end whether or not this show is for you.
