  • It’s a shame.

    Video game publishers stopped commissioning videos from animation studios. The article says this is a “post-pandemic downturn”, but I’m not sure this has anything to do with the pandemic. It’s simply a stylistic shift in what game trailers look like currently.

    The US writer and actor strikes 2023 certainly didn’t help, and pushed out production schedules because they were working so much with Hollywood despite being a Scottish studio.

    But in the end it’s down to how they worked, dragging themselves from fully working on one project to the next one, from commission paycheck to commission paycheck. That’s not a reliable business model in the long run. It can work and it works for lot of these production companies, but this is one example to caution.

    Also, the commissioning studios basically killed them by refusing to pay initial payments when the new projects couldn’t be started on time.
